7 Literature Review Mistakes That Get Chapters Sent Back

The literature review is usually the chapter supervisors send back most often — not because students haven’t read enough, but because of a handful of structural mistakes that repeat across disciplines.
1. Summarising instead of synthesising
Listing studies one after another (“Smith (2019) found X. Jones (2020) found Y.”) reads as an annotated bibliography, not a review. Group sources by theme or argument, and show how they relate to — or contradict — each other.
2. No clear research gap at the end
A literature review that doesn’t end in a stated gap leaves your committee asking “so what?” The final section should say explicitly what hasn’t been studied, and why your research addresses it.
3. Outdated sourcing

Organise by theme, variable, or methodology — not by publication date or source type. A chronological review reads as a history lesson rather than an argument.
6. Ignoring contradictory findings
A review that only cites studies supporting your hypothesis looks selective. Address contradictory findings directly — it strengthens your argument rather than weakening it.
7. Too much theory, not enough critique
Restating a theory without evaluating its limitations or applicability to your context misses the point of a review. Critique, don’t just describe.
